Weekly Pupdates
Week 5 | March 21
Week five is full of growth, exploration, and even more adorable milestones and Smooch & Prosciutto’s puppies are thriving beautifully!
This week, we’ve shared an updated photo here and a playful video over on Facebook, don’t miss it to see their personalities shining through.
Solid Food Progress
The puppies continue their transition to Pawtree Turkey & Sweet Potato (large breed formula, softened). Their appetites are growing, and this nutrient-rich food supports healthy muscle development, brain growth, and immune system support.
Why Mom Matters Now More Than Ever
Some breeders separate puppies from their mother too early, but we know that extended time with Mom is critical at this stage. Week five is when puppies start to refine social skills like:
- Bite inhibition
- Play behavior with littermates
- Early communication cues
Smooch continues to be an attentive, loving mom, always nearby to guide and nurture her babies, a key factor in producing well-adjusted, confident Australian Labradoodles.
Confidence & Neurological Development
Our structured enrichment continues to challenge the puppies in fun ways. This week they have:
- Perfected the two-step slide
- Explored the wobble board and tunnel with more confidence
- Played across our sensory landscape
These activities are carefully designed to build balance, coordination, problem-solving skills, and confidence in new environments.
Exploring New Surfaces
The puppies have now experienced eight different surfaces, including:
- Carpet
- Hardwood
- Tile
- Snow (just briefly!)
- Grass
- Gravel
- Slide
- Wobble board
Our goal is seven surfaces at this stage, and with warmer days ahead, they’ll soon meet even more new textures and terrains perfect for fostering curiosity and courage.
Encouraged Exploration
Curious by nature, these puppies are beginning to explore more independently, always with encouragement close by. Smooch remains a constant presence, ensuring every adventure is safe, fun, and confidence-building.
Why This Week Matters
Every activity, every interaction, and every moment with Mom is intentional. Week five is about strengthening social skills, boosting confidence, and nurturing intelligence all critical for raising exceptional Australian Labradoodles with lasting temperament, adaptability, and charm.
Stay tuned week six promises even more milestones, bigger adventures, and plenty of heart-melting moments!
Week 4 | March 14
Four weeks marks a meaningful shift in puppyhood. The nursery (my office) is no longer just a place for sleeping and nursing—it is becoming a small world of curiosity, movement, and early learning.
Smooch’s puppies are still happily nursing, but this week they began showing real interest in solid food. We have started introducing a softened version of our Turkey & Sweet Potato PawTree diet, allowing them to explore new tastes and textures while still receiving the comfort and nutrition of their mother.
Mom remains with the litter, which is an important part of healthy social development. Through play and interaction she begins teaching the earliest lessons puppies learn from their mother, boundaries, bite inhibition, and appropriate social communication. These subtle corrections and responses are an essential part of raising emotionally balanced dogs.
Physically, the puppies are becoming far more coordinated. The unsteady toddling of last week is giving way to confident little explorers. They are beginning to move with purpose, investigating their environment, interacting with one another, and showing the first sparks of individual personality.
This week we expanded their environment and introduced new elements designed to develop both confidence and motor skills:
-
the two-step slide, encouraging climbing and spatial awareness
-
a wobble board, which gently challenges balance and coordination
-
a tunnel, inviting curiosity and forward movement
They are also beginning to interact with toys that make soft sounds or offer different textures. At this stage, play is still brief and often ends with a puppy tumbling back into the warm pile for a nap, but the foundations of exploration are clearly forming.
Our goal during these early weeks is not to overwhelm puppies with stimulation, but to introduce the world thoughtfully and gradually. Each new experience builds confidence, resilience, and adaptability.
The rhythm of the nursery is changing. Less stillness. More curiosity. Small explorers are emerging.
Week 3 | March 7
Week three is when puppies begin to explore the world around them, testing new textures, sounds, and spaces for the very first time.
They are still spending most of their time sleeping and nursing. Growth is their primary work right now, and it shows. Their bodies are stronger, their movements are more coordinated, and they are steadily gaining weight as they move further away from the fragile newborn stage.
Their eyes are open now, although their vision is still soft and unfocused. They can detect light and movement, but the world is still blurry. Their ears are beginning to respond more clearly as well. When someone enters the room a few small heads will lift, as if they are trying to understand what they are hearing.
Movement continues to change this week. The puppies are beginning to take slow, toddling steps. Their legs are gaining strength and they are starting to find their balance. A puppy may take a few steps toward a sibling or reposition itself in the warm puppy pile before settling back down to sleep.
I always enjoy watching puppies grow and develop. One of the most fascinating parts of raising litters is seeing how consistently puppies reach developmental milestones at about the same time. These stages are important, which is why we focus on placing puppies in age-appropriate environments at the right time. When changes happen too early puppies can become stressed. When changes happen too late, a critical window for learning and imprinting can be missed.
After many years of raising puppies it has become easy to recognize those that were not given proper early handling and socialization. Puppies raised in isolation, without regular human interaction or opportunities to experience simple environmental changes, often show delays in confidence and adaptability later in life.
This week the landscape of the puppy area changed, it includes a designated potty station and a few simple toys. They are not actively playing yet, but they are beginning to explore. As they toddle around they notice the different textures beneath their feet and the soft sounds the toys make when they bump into them.
These small early experiences help puppies become comfortable with new objects and environments. More importantly, they support the development of confident, emotionally stable companions.
For now the rhythm of the nursery is still simple. Sleep. Nurse. Grow. But the world around them is getting just a little bigger.
Week 2 | February 28
At two weeks old, Australian Labradoodle puppies begin to wake up to the world around them. Their eyes slowly open, their ears start responding to sound, and they notice light, movement, and touch for the very first time. These are not just sweet milestones. They are foundational steps in helping each puppy feel safe, secure, and connected to people.
Although their eyes are open, their vision is still very limited and will not be fully developed by eight weeks. For now, they rely heavily on scent. They already recognize when someone enters the room and are becoming more aware of familiar voices and gentle handling. Physically, they are growing stronger each day—wobbly scoots are turning into small steps, and tiny stretches look more purposeful.
This week, the puppies continued daily handling along with Bio Sensor early neurological stimulation. This program was originally developed by the U.S. Military as part of its canine training program and later became known as the “Super Dog” Program. Research showed that when brief neurological exercises are introduced between days three and sixteen of life—a critical window of rapid nervous system development—they can have lasting benefits.
Each puppy is worked with individually once per day. The five exercises are simple and last only three to five seconds each:
-
Tactile stimulation: A cotton swab gently tickles between the toes.
-
Head held erect: The puppy is held upright with the head above the tail.
-
Head pointed down: The puppy is gently positioned with the head facing downward.
-
Supine position: The puppy is held on its back, allowed to squirm lightly.
-
Thermal stimulation: The puppy stands briefly on a cool, damp towel.
These short, intentional exercises are designed to support healthy neurological development, improved stress tolerance, and overall resilience.
As their senses awaken, we expand their environment to match their growth. Development is not something we simply wait for—it is something we guide. Every transition is thoughtful. Every milestone supported. The goal is always the same: a confident, stable, deeply bonded companion.
Eyes open. World bigger.
And this is only the beginning.
Week 1 | February 22
In the quiet of the first week, love takes shape through warmth, rhythm, and trust.
Did you know that dogs are an altricial species? That means they are born underdeveloped, unable to walk, see, or hear. Unlike precocial animals like deer or horses who walk within hours, puppies rely entirely on their mother for weeks.
Week 1 is a time of stillness and connection. Smooch’s babies sleep and nurse almost constantly, their tiny hearts syncing with their mother’s steady rhythm. Their world remains dark and soft, ruled by scent, warmth, and touch. Every gentle moment at this stage builds the foundation of trust they will carry throughout their lives.
This week also held a tender goodbye, as we quietly lost one precious little life. While this is a natural part of breeding and birth, and more common than many realize, it never passes without reverence. We honor the small soul we were entrusted with, grateful for the brief moment it was here.
We continue to handle the babies with intention, just enough to let them feel human touch while ensuring they rest, grow, and thrive. This is where the bond between human and puppy begins. Slow, quiet, and full of promise.
