Follow the journey to watch Togepi & Nacho's puppies to see how these early experiences shape confident, curious puppies

Week 4 | June 14, 2026
The puppies are entering one of my favorite stages. Their personalities are becoming more obvious each day, and the nursery is getting a little louder, a little busier, and a lot more entertaining.

This week has been all about confidence, exploration, and learning that the world is bigger than the whelping box.

This week, we:

  • Expanded their living space to encourage exploration and independence
  • Continued introducing new surfaces, textures, and age-appropriate enrichment
  • Began offering softened PawTree Turkey & Sweet Potato as they transition toward solid food
  • Introduced additional toys designed to encourage curiosity and problem-solving
  • Continued daily handling and positive human interaction

The puppies are becoming steadier on their feet and are beginning to interact more with one another. What started as accidental bumping into littermates is turning into intentional social interaction. They’re learning valuable communication skills through these early puppy-to-puppy encounters.

Mom is still spending plenty of time with the litter and continues to play an important role in their development. These interactions help puppies learn appropriate behavior, frustration tolerance, and the beginnings of bite inhibition.

Every week builds on the one before it. The experiences puppies have during this stage help lay the foundation for confidence, resilience, and adaptability later in life. While they’re still very much babies, they’re beginning to show the curiosity and engagement that will carry them into the next phase of development.

Week 3 | June 6th
Three weeks old already, and things are getting exciting around here!

This week the puppies have officially entered the transitional stage. Their eyes are open, their hearing is improving, and they are becoming much more aware of the world around them. What was once a quiet whelping box full of sleeping babies is quickly turning into a nursery full of curious little explorers.

The puppies are becoming more steady on their feet and are starting to toddle around with much more purpose. They are beginning to notice their littermates, interact with one another, and even engage in their first tiny play sessions. These early social interactions are the foundation for important life skills they will continue developing over the coming weeks.

This week we will continue daily handling, introduce new textures and surfaces, and begin exposing the puppies to gentle household sounds. These early experiences help build confidence and resilience while teaching the puppies that new things are safe and normal.

The next few weeks are some of my favorite stages of development because the puppies transform so quickly. Every day brings something new.

Week 2 | May 30th
At two weeks old, Australian Labradoodle puppies begin to become aware of the world around them. Their eyes slowly start to open, and their ears begin to respond to sound. They notice light, movement, and touch for the first time. These early experiences are not just cute moments. They are important steps in helping the puppies feel safe and secure. Gentle sounds and calm handling teach them that people are a source of comfort and care.
Although their eyes are opening, their vision is still very limited and will not be fully developed even by eight weeks of age. The puppies rely heavily on their sense of smell and can already tell when I or someone else has entered the room. They are starting to move on their own, stand up, and take a few small steps.
This week, the puppies continued to be handled daily and received Bio Sensor stimulation. This early neurological stimulation is used to support healthy immune systems, better cardiovascular performance, stronger adrenal glands, increased tolerance to stress, and greater resistance to disease.
The Bio Sensor method was developed by the U.S. Military as part of their canine program. It was originally created to improve the performance of dogs used for military work and later became known publicly as the “Super Dog” Program. Years of research showed that early neurological stimulation can have long-lasting effects when done during specific developmental windows. The most important period begins on the third day of life and continues through the sixteenth day. This time is critical because the nervous system is growing and developing very rapidly.
The program uses a series of simple exercises designed to stimulate the neurological system. Each puppy is handled once per day and worked with individually. The handler completes all five exercises with one puppy before moving on to the next. Each exercise lasts three to five seconds.
The five Bio Sensor exercises are:
Tactile stimulation
The puppy is held in one hand. A cotton swab is used to gently tickle between the toes on one foot for three to five seconds.
Head held erect
Using both hands, the puppy is held straight up so the head is directly above the tail. This position is held for three to five seconds.
Head pointed down
The puppy is held securely and gently turned so the head points downward toward the ground. This position is held for three to five seconds.
Supine position
The puppy is held on its back with its muzzle facing upward. The puppy is allowed to squirm or resist slightly. This position is held for three to five seconds.
Thermal stimulation
A damp towel that has been cooled in the refrigerator for at least five minutes is placed on the floor. The puppy is set on the towel with its feet down and is not restrained. This lasts for three to five seconds.

These brief daily exercises help support healthy development during a critical early stage of life and are one of the many ways the puppies are gently prepared for the world ahead.

Week 1 | May 23rd
Puppies are an altricial species and that one fact explains why they have become mans’ best friend
Did you know that dogs are an altricial species they are born before they are fully developed in contrast to precocial species who can stand and walk around within hours of birth?
Apart from not being able to stand puppies are not yet fully developed. Their eyes and ears are sealed shut to protect them while they continue to develop. It will take a puppy months of development to achieve what other mammals can do shortly after birth.
There is a huge social aspect to this. Precocial species are able to wander off and get lost moments after birth. It is for their protection that they imprint and bond with their mother and distrust and fear everything else. In contrast, altricial species cannot wander off for weeks or even months after birth so they will always be under the protection of their mother. They have a long and flexible social period. It is because of this that humans and dogs are able to bond so closely.
